How to Choose the Right Wheel Offset for Your Vehicle

If you've ever shopped for aftermarket wheels, you've probably come across the term wheel offset — and wondered what it actually means for your vehicle. Getting the offset right is one of the most important factors in wheel fitment. What Is Wheel Offset?

Wheel offset is the distance (in millimeters) between the wheel's hub mounting surface — the flat part that bolts to your vehicle — and the wheel's centerline. It's stamped or engraved on the back of most wheels and expressed as a number like ET35 or +35mm.

There are three types of offset:

  • Positive offset (+) — The hub mounting surface is toward the front (street side) of the wheel. Most modern front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles use positive offset. Example: +35mm, +45mm.
  • Zero offset (0) — The hub mounting surface is exactly at the centerline of the wheel.
  • Negative offset (–) — The hub mounting surface is toward the back (brake side) of the wheel. Common on trucks, older rear-wheel-drive vehicles, and lifted builds. Example: –12mm.

Why Does Wheel Offset Matter?

Offset directly affects how far your wheels sit in or out of the wheel well. Here's what happens when you go in either direction:

How to Find the Right Offset for Your Vehicle

The best starting point is your vehicle's OEM (factory) offset. This is the offset your car came with from the manufacturer. You can find it in your owner's manual, on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, or by searching your vehicle's year, make, and model online.

From there, most enthusiasts stay within ±10–15mm of the factory offset for a safe, clean fitment. Going beyond that range is possible but requires careful measurement and sometimes modifications like spacers or fender rolling.

Offset vs. Backspacing: What's the Difference?

You may also see the term backspacing, especially on truck forums. Backspacing measures the distance from the back edge of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. While offset is measured from the centerline, backspacing is measured from the rear lip. Both describe the same concept — where the wheel sits relative to the hub — just from different reference points. Most modern wheel specs use offset (ET).

Can I Use Wheel Spacers to Adjust Offset?

Yes — wheel spacers are a popular way to push wheels outward when you want a more aggressive stance or need to clear brake calipers. A 10mm spacer effectively reduces your offset by 10mm (pushing the wheel outward). However, spacers should always be hub-centric and properly torqued. When in doubt, consult a fitment specialist.
